FluentCart Shipping Integration: Live Rates and Labels, Coming Soon

Showing a shipping price at checkout is easy. Making sure that price matches what the label costs is the hard part.
Every store that ships physical products runs into this sooner or later. Zone rates are a good start, but they’re an estimate. Carriers change their prices, boxes come in every size, and the estimate drifts. It never sat right with us that the number a customer pays could start as a guess.
So we’re building the FluentCart Shippo integration, our first live carrier integration, and it’s launching soon as a beta. It will bring real carrier rates to checkout and label buying into the order screen of the FluentCart ecommerce plugin you already run. Here’s what the experience will look like, why Shippo comes first, where it works, and why we’re starting with a beta.
TL;DR
Why Shippo is FluentCart’s First Shipping Integration

We picked Shippo first for two reasons. It’s easier to test properly, because Shippo gives developers a separate test mode with its own API keys. It also opens discounted rates on carriers that many store owners already use, such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL Express.
Shipping integrations were never going to be a one-and-done project. Something had to go first, and the order mattered.
Testing came up first in every conversation. Shipping code is hard to check without spending money, because every real label costs real postage. Shippo’s test mode lets our team run the full loop again and again: quote a rate, buy a label, check the result, repeat. That matters more than it sounds. A shipping bug doesn’t show up as an error message. It shows up as a wrong price on a real order.
Rates came second. For stores shipping from the United States, Shippo turns on discounted USPS, UPS, and FedEx rates automatically in every account, plus DHL Express for international parcels. A new store gets better postage from day one, with no carrier contract to sort out first.
Where the FluentCart Shippo Integration Will Work
Shippo can create labels with DHL Express, FedEx, and UPS in any country where those carriers operate, for domestic and international parcels. On top of that, it adds local carriers for stores shipping from eight countries: the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.
That’s the part we care about most, because FluentCart stores sell from all over the map. A shop in Manchester wants Royal Mail. A shop in Toronto wants Canada Post. One flat zone rate can’t cover both well.
Here’s where the FluentCart Shippo integration will find local carriers:
One honest caveat. Some local carriers only handle domestic parcels. Shippo lists DPD UK, Colissimo, and Correos as domestic-only, for example. Before you plan international routes, check the Shippo carrier capabilities page for the carriers you want.
What the FluentCart Shippo Integration Experience Will Look Like

The integration will touch both sides of an order. Shoppers will see live carrier rates at checkout and choose the service they want. Store owners will quote and buy labels from the order screen, decide which carriers show up, and keep every shipping method they already set up.
Live rates next to your zone methods

Live rates will sit alongside your existing zone shipping methods. They won’t replace them. You might keep a flat rate for your home country and offer live rates for international orders. Or you might show local pickup next to UPS Ground. Both can appear at checkout.
A rate that matches the real cost is easier to show up front. Fewer surprises at the final step is one of the steadier ways to reduce cart abandonment without touching your prices.
Customers pick their preferred carrier
Some shoppers trust one carrier and avoid another. With the FluentCart Shippo integration, customers will choose their preferred carrier and shipping method at checkout. You won’t have to guess which service they’d want, and they won’t have to email you about it.
Carrier options in your FluentCart dashboard

You’ll manage carrier options from the FluentCart dashboard. Day-to-day choices about which carriers your store offers will happen where you already run your orders, not in a separate tool.
Quote and buy labels from the Create shipment form
When an order is ready to go, you’ll open the Create shipment form, pull quotes, and buy the label. If you set a preferred Shippo carrier name, like usps or ups, FluentCart preselects that carrier. If you don’t, it preselects the cheapest rate. Label buying moves inside your order management workflow instead of living in a second browser tab.
Shipping status hooks for developers
Shipping status changes will fire hooks. Developers and agencies can use them to send custom notifications, sync shipment status to other tools, or trigger their own workflows when a parcel moves.
Your own shipping methods stay available

Shippo will be an option, not a requirement. Self-carrier shipping stays exactly where it is. If you deliver locally, use your own courier, or offer pickup, those methods keep working the way they do today.
We Rebuilt the Shipping Module to Support Shippo
Plugging Shippo into the old shipping module would have worked for a demo and struggled in real stores. So we refactored the module from the ground up. That rebuild gives FluentCart three new capabilities: split shipments, live rates from integration providers, and multi-currency rate conversion.
Don’t get me wrong, the old module did its job. Flat rates, free shipping thresholds, and local pickup all worked fine. It wasn’t built to ask an outside service for a price in real time, though. We took the hit on time and rebuilt it, rather than stack a live-rate system on a base that wasn’t made for one.
Split shipments
One order won’t have to mean one parcel. Say a customer buys a framed print and a T-shirt. The print needs a rigid box and a careful service, while the shirt fits in a mailer. If you’ve read our guide to shipping art prints safely, you know why those two shouldn’t share a box.
With split shipments, you’ll send parts of an order separately. It also helps when one item is in stock today and another arrives next week. If you’re still building out your ecommerce fulfillment process, this gives you room to ship what’s ready.
Live rates from integration providers
The new module can ask a shipping provider for rates in real time. Shippo will be the first provider to use it. We built the plumbing so future shipping integrations can plug into the same system instead of starting over.
Multi-currency conversion
Your store sells in one currency. The carrier quotes in another. Before the rebuild, that mismatch was a problem. Now FluentCart converts the rate into your store’s currency, even when Shippo or the carrier doesn’t accept that currency directly. Your customer will see one consistent total, in the currency they’re paying in.
Why The Shippo Integration will be Beta
Shipping has more edge cases than any test plan can list. Addresses, package sizes, carrier rules, currencies, and customs paperwork combine in ways that only show up with real orders. A beta lets us find those cases with stores that opted in, then fix them before a full release.
Test mode has taken us far. It can’t reproduce every real address, every odd box size, or every carrier quirk. Even Shippo’s own docs show how much varies by carrier. Canada Post, for example, needs separate credentials for test mode. Multiply that by every carrier, origin country, and currency, and you can see why we’re careful.
There are cases we haven’t hit yet. You’ll probably find one before we do. When you do, tell us, and we’ll work through the reports as they come in.
We’ve built shipping this way before. Store owners can already set include and exclude countries for each shipping method, which shipped in FluentCart 1.3.17. Shippo is the next step on the same path, and your feedback will decide how fast it gets to stable.
How to Prepare for The Shippo Integration
You can prepare now. Create a Shippo account, try its test mode, and check that your physical products have accurate weights and dimensions, since live rates depend on them. Then decide which zone methods you’ll keep next to live rates.
A short checklist for the FluentCart Shippo integration beta:
What changes for your store
We started with one problem: the shipping price at checkout shouldn’t be a guess. With live rates, the price your customer pays will come from the same carrier that prints the label. You’ll buy that label from the order screen, and the estimate stops drifting.
Shippo is the first shipping integration in FluentCart, not the last. The rebuilt module means split shipments, live rates, and currency conversion become part of how FluentCart handles shipping. We’ll share the beta release notes on the blog when it lands. If you’re not running FluentCart yet, see how FluentCart works for physical product stores before the beta opens.
Thank you to every store owner who will test this with us. Here’s to shipping prices you don’t have to guess.
